What If God Plays Drums?


Here’s a PockPoem that I wrote, illustrated, animated, and scored, which basically comes from the idea that God might be a drummer. Well, it really just comes out of rarified air. 

As with much of my stuff, I’m not sure exactly what it means. But I tried tapping into the Universe, and this is how the Universe tapped back.

I only really started playing drums a few months ago, when I got an electronic set for my 52nd birthday so I could have more freedom while recording. Now it’s a daily ritual that begins my daily art adventures (the tapping into the Universe thing we discussed earlier). I really have no idea what I’m doing, but sometimes I’m starting to feel like I’m actually really doing it.

Regardless, I know that when I get that feeling, it feels good, on a biblical level. When the beat is true, the groove is real, there isn’t anything else in the world that matters. In fact: It feels like the whole world is part of the same rhythmic matter, and it’s nice to belong to something, especially something so huge.

Heartline Like a Wolf

Look closely, and you can see the feint makings of a heartline on that there wolf above, howling away at the cycles of the moon.  I'd forgotten all about the decorative lines adorning the Zuni fetishes that populated every corner of my mom's Southwestern art gallery, and thus our home; until my nephew and buddy both told me that the wolf is their favorite animal, when I prodded for birthday drawing inspiration.  So I drew this guy, and as I started blowing him out in post, it just dawned on me: he may not be a fetish per se, but he definitely need's that arrow.  Though I could surprisingly remember what the inlaid line was called, the heartline, I couldn't even vaguely recall why it adorned the Native American stone-carved animal amulets that I loved so much.
