Deaf: A Sonic MicroPoem About Tuning It Out
Here’s a PockPoem loosely inspired by Mike D’s solid return to the public ear.
As a diehard Beasties fan, I was just happy to find out the man is making music again, even without his brother and my namesake, AdRock. As I listened to the first new offering in years though, I heard something that sounded somewhat familiar, as Mike D’s voice will always be, but also something akin to what my nascent explorations in GarageBand had been circling… not really on purpose, just what was coming out as I was figuring it out.
That’s not to say this PockPoem sounds a whole lot like Mike D, but it does feature a definite shoutout in the usage of “Deaf”, though Mike D would probably spell it “Def”. It’s brief, as any good micropoem ought to be, but I think it gets to the heart of the rub about feeling guilty being able to sit in my ivory tower making art while so many suffer, but also feeling like it’s the only thing I can do in the face of such massive suffering.
Perhaps there’s no salve for such a rub, but at least it’s productive, and as Rent tells us: The opposite of war isn’t peace, it’s creation.
